Courlis - 1882 - Published in "Le Yacht" magazine
Courlis
Courlis' plan was published around mid 1882 by "Le Yacht" magazine, together with an article written by the designer, "capitaine au long cours L.Caillaud". ( "L. Caillaud seafaring captain"). He tells the story of how Courlis is an evolution from previous successful designs of his, and how well the boat behaved during the first sea trials, on the bay of Rio on a windy day.
Courlis is gunther rigged, and very typical of the then popular "Clipper d'Argenteuil' that raced on the river Seine. They can be seen, and admired, on many paintings by Monet, Renoir and other painters. You can find a static model of "Lison", one of the most famous clippers, on this web site. If you build Courlis, please let me know, and send me a couple of pictures.
The two plans I have attached should be enough for a brave model builder to get started on an RC controlled Courlis. The scale of the original copy is a weird 3/20, equals 1/6.66. Based on it, I calculated that the hull is about 74 centimeters long, the main boom about 69 cm, the mainmast 50 centimeters above deck, and the yard 60 centimeters. Maximum height of rigging above deck around 86 centimeters. Other dimensions can easily be calculated. The centerboard was made of two thin plates of brass, filled with lead, and attached to the boat by two bolts. Draft was around 22.6 cm, which is enough for a boat this size. A long bowsprit and larger jib was an option. The smaller jib has a boom, and a brass traveller is fitted on the deck for it.
