Saint Elme
ex "Bedouin"
6 tons gaff cutter
William Fife design - 1885
1/10 scale sailing model

Saint Elme under sails
Print from "Le Yacht" by Philippe Daryl - 1890
The medal that started it all: winner at l'Ile Tudy, July 1888
The deck layout does not appear on either plan, so I'll have to rely upon a print published in 1889 in "Le Yacht", and then again in 1890 in a smaller format (Shown on top of page).
I picked the 1/10 scale, which gives a convenient size for the model, 92 cm on deck for 6 kg displacement. Plenty of room for the radio gear, and 4+ kg of lead in the keel, enough to enable the boat to carry a good press of sails, just like the original.
The building technique I will use is the same as for Ar Men or Gudrun Elvira, red cedar planking over a sturdy plug made of 10mm thick sections. After its removal from the plug, the hull will be fitted with steam bent ash frames, and oak floors, then the external ballast will be cast and bolted through the floors. Here we go!
Saint Elme: work in progress
The backbone is screwed on to the plug. After some trimming and adjusting, it's removed to allow me to put a layer of packing tape on the plug wherever it might comme in contact with the glue used during the planking.
